SEP Sets Winter Break From Dec. 22 With Students Returning Jan. 12

Several states brought the last day forward citing cold weather or local scheduling.

Overview

  • Mexico’s official basic-education winter recess begins Monday, Dec. 22, and students are scheduled to return to classrooms on Monday, Jan. 12, giving them 24 days off when weekends are counted.
  • School directors have an intensive workshop on Jan. 7 and teachers on Jan. 8–9, so staff resume duties before students as set in the 2025–2026 SEP calendar.
  • Friday, Dec. 19 remains a regular school day nationwide except in jurisdictions that advanced their break, according to the latest guidance based on the SEP calendar.
  • Local adjustments include Jalisco ending classes on Dec. 17 for about 1,606,995 students and 84,000 teachers, Tlaxcala starting vacations on Dec. 19 to reduce viral risk, and Chihuahua and Durango advancing the break due to cold; Veracruz also finished earlier.
  • The SEP calendar totals 185 school days, lists the Semana Santa break from March 30 to April 10, 2026, and sets the cycle’s end for Wednesday, July 15, 2026.
