SEP Publishes 2026–27 School Calendar as Classes Start August 31

The calendar fixes national dates for instruction, teacher sessions and holiday breaks for millions of students.

Overview

  • The Secretaría de Educación Pública published the calendar in the Diario Oficial and set the start of classes for Monday, August 31, 2026 with 185 effective instructional days for pre‑school, primary and secondary that end on July 9, 2027.
  • The calendar names two long recesses (December 21–January 5 and a spring break in late March) and schedules eight ordinary Consejo Técnico Escolar sessions with the first student-free CTE day on September 25 and the first official holiday on September 16.
  • Teacher-training institutions (escuelas normales) follow a different timetable with 190 school days, an August 17–28 planning period, and a July 13, 2027 end date for their cycle.
  • The SEP keeps September 1 as a regular school day even though President Claudia Sheinbaum will deliver her Second Report to Congress that date, and states and some private or higher-education institutions may apply authorized local calendar adjustments.
  • The start of the year revives operational debates over cellphone rules, the classroom use of AI, school infrastructure and learning gaps, which could shape policy and resource priorities during the 2026–27 cycle.
