SEP Circulates Draft 2026–27 School Calendar; Teachers Return a Week Before Students

The education ministry has released an anteproyecto with key dates but the schedule must be published in the Diario Oficial de la Federación to take legal effect.

Overview

  • The Secretaría de Educación Pública has posted a draft calendar proposing 185 effective school days, a student start date of August 31, 2026, and an end date of July 9, 2027.
  • Secretary Mario Delgado confirmed on Monday that teachers will resume on August 24, 2026, to hold preparatory Consejo Técnico Escolar (CTE) work while students return one week later on August 31.
  • The draft lists two main vacation windows (winter roughly Dec. 21–Jan. 6 and spring/ Semana Santa roughly Mar. 22–Apr. 2) and schedules multiple CTE Fridays and other suspension days that would create a series of ‘puentes’ for students.
  • The document is an anteproyecto published on the Plataforma Integral de Gobernanza Regulatoria and will only become binding after the SEP requests publication in the Diario Oficial de la Federación, with states allowed to alter dates for safety or local needs.
  • The proposal also sets teacher administrative dates such as grade-registration windows (Nov. 13, Mar. 5 and Jun. 18) and applies to public schools and private schools incorporated into the National Education System, a detail that matters for family planning and school operations.
