Overview

• South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said troops fired warning shots on Aug. 19 after North Korean soldiers briefly crossed the Military Demarcation Line, and the intruders withdrew without returning fire.
• The U.N. Command estimated about 30 North Korean personnel crossed before loudspeaker warnings and designated-area warning shots compelled them to move back north.
• North Korea denounced the action as a "serious provocation," asserted more than 10 rounds were fired from a 12.7 mm machine gun, and threatened "corresponding countermeasures."
• Pyongyang said its troops were working on a permanent border barrier and stated it notified U.S. forces of the project on June 25 and July 18 to avoid accidental clashes.
