Seoul Breaks Ground on Heatherwick-Led Nodeul Island Arts Hub

The first phase will deliver floating aerial gardens as part of a 370.4 billion won plan targeting full completion in 2028.

Overview

  • The Seoul Metropolitan Government held a groundbreaking ceremony on Nodeul Island with Mayor Oh Se-hoon and designer Thomas Heatherwick in attendance.
  • The project is a pillar of the city’s Great Han River initiative and will preserve the existing cultural complex while expanding public access across the island.
  • Plans include a skywalk linking the east and west ends with a gallery and observatory, plus a landscaped multi-layered forest on the eastern side.
  • New cultural zones feature a Sky Art Garden of seven elevated, floating structures and a Waterside Cultural Zone for performances and exhibitions.
  • Phased construction begins now with staged openings to follow, and the design adds an Atelier Nodeul media façade under Hangang Bridge that will double as a ferry boarding point connecting Yeouido and Jamwon.
