Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 5 Adds User-Replaceable Batteries

The redesign responds to new EU battery rules and aims to keep $300 earbuds usable longer by letting owners swap the tiny lithium cells themselves.

Overview

  • Sennheiser announced the MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 on Thursday and said the earbuds will begin shipping September 3, 2026, at a U.S. price of $299.95.
  • Both the earbuds and the charging case use user-replaceable batteries that can be accessed with a compact screwdriver included in the box, a change from the sealed, glued assemblies common in premium TWS models.
  • On paper the new model adds Bluetooth 6.0 support, Qualcomm aptX Adaptive and aptX Lossless, a 7mm TrueResponse driver, Dolby Atmos with head-tracking, expanded mic and sensor arrays, and AI speech extraction.
  • Sennheiser says battery life is up to 12 hours per earbud with ANC off or about 6 hours with ANC on and up to 40 hours total with the case, and the product features a slimmer, finless housing and IP54 dust and splash resistance.
  • Major questions remain about long-term spare-part availability and replacement-battery pricing and independent tests of sound, ANC and the swap procedure; the move could push other makers toward more repairable earbuds if Sennheiser keeps parts affordable.
