Overview

  • Rupam Asom, a top commander of the banned ULFA(I) insurgent group, was arrested near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border in a joint operation by Assam Police, Assam Rifles, and CRPF.
  • The operation, launched early on May 24, 2025, was based on intelligence provided by Kolkata-based Military Intelligence.
  • Rupam Asom, named in an NIA charge sheet for the 2018 killing of Bhaskar Kalita, was involved in extortion, arms smuggling, and other criminal activities.
  • Security forces recovered a pistol, hand grenades, and other materials during the raid, and further search operations are underway to apprehend additional ULFA(I) cadres.
  • The AFSPA remains active in Tinsukia, Sibsagar, and Charaideo districts, as authorities continue counter-insurgency measures in the region.
