Senior Maharashtra police officer in dowry-suicide probe moved to Home Guards

The state government has launched an inquiry into his alleged shielding of the accused after removing him from prison oversight.

  • On May 30, Jalindar Supekar was transferred from the Maharashtra Prisons Department to serve as deputy commandant general of the Home Guards.
  • He was stripped of his additional charge as deputy inspector general of prisons for the Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Nagpur divisions a day earlier.
  • The Maharashtra government has directed the ADG Prisons to probe claims he protected Hagawane family members accused in the dowry harassment case.
  • Vaishnavi Hagawane allegedly died by suicide on May 16 in Pune after her in-laws reportedly tortured her for dowry, leading to the arrest of her entire family.
  • Social activist Anjali Damania has called for a full investigation, alleging Supekar helped the Hagawanes obtain arms licences and obstructed legal proceedings.
