Senior Haryana IPS Officer Found Dead in Chandigarh; Police Seize Note and Open Corruption Angle

Overview

  • Chandigarh Police said Y Puran Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer, was found with a gunshot wound at his Sector 11 residence around 1:30 pm in a reported suicide.
  • Investigators recovered the firearm used, seized phones and documents, and called in Central Forensic Science Laboratory teams to process the scene.
  • A will and a multi-page note were recovered, according to police, and their contents are under examination as part of the inquiry.
  • Rohtak SP said Head Constable Sushil Kumar was arrested and sent to judicial custody on allegations he sought Rs 2.5 lakh monthly from a liquor contractor “on behalf of” the officer.
  • The body was discovered by the officer’s daughter in a soundproof basement; his wife, senior IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, is returning from Japan, after which a board of doctors will conduct the post-mortem.
