Senior Doctor Found Guilty of Misconduct in Teen’s Sepsis Death

The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service ruled that Professor Richard Thompson’s failure to transfer Martha Mills to paediatric intensive care amounted to gross negligence, with sanctions to be determined this week.

Overview

  • The tribunal concluded that Thompson did not escalate Mills’s deteriorating condition on 29 August 2021 despite clear high-risk sepsis indicators and omitted an in-person review.
  • Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service chair Robin Ince described the omissions as particularly grave misconduct impairing Thompson’s fitness to practise.
  • The panel noted Thompson has since remediated his practices and currently presents no ongoing impairment of patient safety.
  • Martha’s Rule, enacted in 2024 after Mills’s death, has generated over 2,000 patient escalations and more than 100 paediatric intensive care reviews across NHS hospitals.
  • The tribunal will reconvene this week to decide what, if any, sanctions should be imposed on Thompson’s medical registration.
