Overview
- Senegal officially joined the Artemis Accords on July 24, signing as the 56th nation committed to NASA’s Artemis program.
- Director General Maram Kairé signed on behalf of the Senegalese Agency for Space Studies in a ceremony at NASA Headquarters with senior U.S. and Senegalese diplomats present.
- The ceremony followed President Trump’s recent meeting with Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and other African leaders aimed at deepening U.S.-Africa space cooperation.
- Signatories agree to peaceful, transparent exploration practices such as aiding astronauts in distress, sharing scientific data openly, and preserving historically significant lunar and deep-space sites.
- Senegal’s adherence builds on its earlier collaboration with NASA, including a 2021 ground observation campaign to chart asteroid Orus ahead of the Lucy mission in 2028.
