Overview
- Senate Republicans have launched a marathon vote-a-rama on a budget reconciliation package that permanently extends 2017 tax cuts while imposing stringent work requirements and deep cuts on Medicaid and SNAP.
- The CBO projects the package would enact over $1 trillion in Medicaid cuts and roughly $1.2 trillion in SNAP reductions, resulting in nearly 12 million additional uninsured Americans by 2034.
- Several GOP senators—including Thom Tillis, Rand Paul, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski—are withholding support over the scope of Medicaid cuts, and Sen. Jim Justice voted against a Rick Scott proposal to shrink federal matching funds for new expansion enrollees.
- The Senate parliamentarian has removed or modified core provisions, including restrictions on provider taxes and work requirement structures, after ruling they violated the Byrd Rule.
- Holding a 53–47 majority that allows for just three defections, Senate leaders are racing to secure enough Republican votes before the chamber adjourns for its July 4 recess.
