Overview

  • The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee voted 12-11 along party lines to advance Monarez’s nomination to the full Senate.
  • President Trump tapped Monarez in March following the withdrawal of David Weldon and she has led the agency as acting director since January.
  • If confirmed, she would be the first non-physician CDC director in more than 50 years and the first to face Senate approval under new accountability rules.
  • Monarez holds a Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology and previously served as deputy director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health.
  • Her ascent follows months of CDC turmoil that have included staff reductions, the departure of senior officials and an overhaul of vaccine advisory processes by HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
