Senate Committee to Subpoena Pharma CEOs Over Drug Pricing
Johnson & Johnson and Merck CEOs are called to testify on why their drugs cost significantly more in the U.S. compared to other countries.
- Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Chair Bernie Sanders plans to subpoena the CEOs of Johnson & Johnson and Merck to testify on drug pricing.
- The CEOs have been asked to explain why their companies charge significantly higher prices for medicine in the U.S. compared to other countries.
- Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) CEO Chris Boerner and one other unnamed pharmaceutical CEO have agreed to testify before the HELP Committee.
- Johnson & Johnson, Merck, and BMS manufacture some of the most expensive drugs sold in the U.S., including Januvia, Imbruvica, and Eliquis respectively.
- All three companies are currently suing to halt Medicare Drug Price Negotiation under the Inflation Reduction Act.
