Overview
- The Senate opened the first of five required plenary debate sessions on the PEC on Tuesday as President Davi Alcolumbre scheduled three discussion days for this week.
- The constitutional change would abolish the 6x1 schedule, require two days off per week, lower the weekly cap from 44 to 40 hours and protect pay through a staged transition to 42 hours then 40 hours.
- Because the measure changes the Constitution it needs three‑fifths support — 49 of 81 senators — in each of two voting rounds to pass and any amendment would send it back to the Chamber of Deputies.
- Government minister José Guimarães said he will press Senate and Chamber leaders for a voting timetable but several senators and the PL bloc oppose rushing the vote before the presidential contest is decided.
- If the Senate approves the text unchanged it will be promulgated by Congress, but the post‑first‑round election outcome that boosted the PL’s strength has made securing the required 49 votes more uncertain.
