Senamhi Issues Orange Alerts for New Year Rains in Peru's Highlands and Amazon

The alerts extend through early January, with the northern jungle forecast to accumulate up to 65 mm of rain on Jan. 1.

Overview

  • Aviso No. 467 covers Dec. 31 to Jan. 2 for the sierra, forecasting rain, sleet, hail above 2,800 m and localized snow above 3,900 m with thunderstorms and wind gusts near 35 km/h.
  • Aviso No. 468 applies from Dec. 31 to Jan. 1 for the Amazon, warning of moderate to strong rains with electrical activity and winds near 45 km/h.
  • Projected rainfall totals reach about 60 mm on Dec. 31 and up to 65 mm on Jan. 1 in the northern selva, around 55 mm/day in the central selva and roughly 50 mm/day in the southern selva.
  • Senamhi also expects increased afternoon and nighttime cloudiness with light, scattered showers over the north and central coast during the period.
  • Named departments under the alerts include Amazonas, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Cusco, Huánuco, Junín, Loreto, Madre de Dios, Pasco, Puno, San Martín and Ucayali, with no confirmed impacts reported.
