Senamhi Issues Level-Yellow Wind Advisory for 11 Regions Through Oct. 20

The notice warns of gusts and visibility-reducing dust in Ica that could threaten roofs, windows and small coastal vessels.

Overview

  • Senamhi published Meteorological Notice No. 423, which was issued on Sunday and remains in force through Tuesday, Oct. 20, warning of increased winds along the central and southern coast and the southern highlands.
  • Forecasts call for gusts up to about 40 km/h with regionally lower sustained speeds and stronger winds near Ica and the sierra sur that could lift dust and sand and sharply cut horizontal visibility.
  • Indeci urged local and regional governments to carry out technical safety inspections of buildings and to recommend that residents secure roofs, reinforce windows and moor small boats to reduce damage.
  • Night and early-morning coastal conditions are expected to include fog, mist and scattered drizzle that may further reduce visibility and disrupt travel and outdoor work.
  • Senamhi noted that the same oceanic and atmospheric conditions tied to the current El Niño costero will keep coastal temperatures high through Oct. 31, a factor that may worsen heat and public-health risks while officials monitor for any escalation of the wind advisory.
