Sen. Ron Johnson Seeks DOJ Review of Wisconsin Judge in Fake Electors Case

The request centers on claims that a retired judge authored an August ruling in the case, a contention the presiding judge rejects.

Overview

  • Johnson sent a Thursday letter to U.S. Attorney Pam Bondi asking the Justice Department to examine misconduct allegations raised by Jim Troupis’s legal team.
  • Judge John Hyland on Tuesday declined to recuse himself, denied an evidentiary hearing in another county, and kept a preliminary hearing set for Monday, Dec. 15.
  • Newly unsealed defense filings allege retired Judge Frank D. Remington ghostwrote Hyland’s Aug. 22 order denying dismissal, citing a forensic-linguist affidavit and metadata references.
  • Hyland said only he and his staff attorney drafted the decision, and Remington said he never discussed the case with his son or Hyland and did not help write any rulings.
  • Troupis, Kenneth Chesebro, and Mike Roman face 11 felony forgery counts filed in 2024 over the 2020 alternate-electors effort, and the DOJ did not immediately comment on Johnson’s request.
