Ernst was hosting the lunch, which featured food from her home state of Iowa, including pork chops and ribeye steak.
Ernst later joked about the incident on social media, thanking Paul and making a political comment about 'woke policies'.
Paul, an ophthalmologist by profession, received praise from his colleagues for his quick action.
This is not the first time a senator has needed the Heimlich maneuver during a lunch; in 2018, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) performed it on Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO), resulting in a cracked rib.
