Sen. Kennedy Dramatizes Radioactive Shrimp Concerns as FDA Probe Continues

FDA says no shrimp that tested positive for cesium-137 reached the U.S. marketplace.

Overview

  • At a Capitol Hill hearing, Sen. John Kennedy displayed an image from the film Alien and warned that eating imported radioactive shrimp could make people “look like the Alien” or “grow an extra ear.”
  • The FDA in August advised consumers not to eat certain frozen shrimp sold under Walmart’s Great Value brand after U.S. Customs and Border Protection detections of cesium-137 in shipments processed by Indonesia’s PT Bahari Makmur Sejati.
  • The agency says the shipment that tested positive did not enter U.S. commerce and reports that no product that tested positive or alerted for cesium-137 has reached the marketplace.
  • Kennedy criticized NOAA’s inspection rate for foreign seafood and backed tighter import controls as lawmakers tout H.R. 3324, the Safer Shrimp Imports Act, to add requirements for foreign shrimp facilities.
  • Recall notices and removals touched multiple suppliers and retailers, with Kennedy citing Walmart and Kroger lots and reports noting U.S. firms including AquaStar, Southwind Foods, and Beaver Street Fisheries received warnings.
