Seminole Tribe to Launch In-Person Sports Betting in Florida in December Following Supreme Court Ruling

Sports betting will commence at six of the Seminole Tribe's casinos throughout Florida, marking the first legal sports betting options within the state; however, the tribe has not announced plans for online sports betting amid continuing legal disputes.

  • The Seminole Tribe of Florida will launch in-person sports betting at its six casinos in December, marking the first legal sports betting within the state. The decision follows a Supreme Court ruling which paved the way for a compact between Florida and the tribe, initially agreed upon in 2021, to come into effect.
  • Sports betting, along with craps and roulette, will become available at specified Seminole casinos on 7th, 8th, and 11th December. More information about the launch of the games is to be announced soon.
  • The sports betting initiative is projected to create jobs, increase tourism, and provide billions in added revenue for Florida. Florida's Governor Ron DeSantis has praised the compact as 'historic' and anticipates its full implementation.
  • The main legal contention surrounding the compact involved the Seminole Tribe's ability to provide online sports betting within the state. Though the Supreme Court ruling has cleared the way for in-person sports betting, there is still no clear resolution regarding online sports betting.
  • The Indian Regulatory Gaming Act, enacted in 1988, provides the legal framework for gambling on tribal lands. A tribe must enter into a compact with its resident state to offer casino games and sports betting, and the compact must be approved by the Secretary of the Interior.
