Seminci Finalizes Program and Names Elvira Mínguez Espiga de Honor

The Valladolid festival will pair a wide international slate with career tributes to signal continuity under interim codirectors.

Overview

  • Organizers confirmed the 71st Semana Internacional de Cine de Valladolid will present 208 films with 121 premieres and run from October 23 to 31, positioning the festival as a barometer for contemporary auteur cinema.
  • Elvira Mínguez will receive the Espiga de Honor in recognition of a career that the festival says extends beyond acting to include writing and directing.
  • The international jury for the main competition is Francesca Andreoli, Grégoire Hetzel, Dennis Lim, Elena Manrique and Federico Veiroj, who will judge 22 feature films competing for the Espiga de Oro.
  • Opening and closing titles are set: Lili Horvát’s My Notes on Mars will open the festival and Gael García Bernal’s Hombre al agua will close it, while the program also includes high-profile premieres such as Paul Thomas Anderson’s Cameron Winter at Carnegie Hall.
  • The edition will pay formal tribute to the late director José Luis Cienfuegos and is being run in transition by codirectors Mariona Viader and Javier H. Estrada, a step organizers say preserves the festival’s auteur focus as they prepare for a permanent director search.
