Semifinals Begin on México Canta as Blue Malboro Secures First Final Spot

Run by the Secretaría de Cultura under President Claudia Sheinbaum’s anti-violence initiative, the contest will stage weekly regional semifinals through late September before its October 5 finale in Mexico City.

Overview

  • The U.S. East semifinal aired August 17 at 7 p.m. CDT, featuring eight artists and culminating in rapper Blue Malboro’s advancement with his song “Cuando Niño.”
  • A jury of Regina Orozco, Mónica Vélez, América Sierra and Fabián Rincón selected Blue Malboro as the first finalist based on his emotive performance.
  • Six weekly televised semifinals will continue Sundays through September 21 on public outlets including Canal 22, Canal 11 and IMER, with a highlights recap on September 28 and a grand final at Teatro de la Ciudad Esperanza Iris on October 5.
  • Chosen from over 15,000 applicants, the 48 semifinalists receive professional coaching, studio time and national broadcast exposure as part of a binational effort to promote nonviolent narratives.
  • The top three finishers will earn recording contracts and production support from national, transnational or independent labels linked to the Consejo Mexicano de la Música.
