Self: NCAA tarnished my reputation
Self, Kansas AD say reputations ‘tarnished’ despite avoiding major NCAA penalties
- The NCAA initially charged the Kansas men's basketball team with five Level 1 violations related to bribery in college basketball, which was later downgraded by the Independent Accountability Review Process (IARP), sparing the team from serious penalties such as a postseason ban.
- Despite the downgrade, Bill Self, the head coach of Kansas' basketball team, says his reputation has been greatly tarnished by the investigation.
- As a result of the IARP's ruling, Kansas had to vacate 15 wins and its Final Four appearance from the 2017-18 season due in part to the participation of Silvio De Sousa, whose guardian had been accused of accepting money from an Adidas intermediary.
- Kansas self-imposed some penalties, including a four-game suspension for Self and assistant Kurtis Townsend at the start of the 2022-23 season.
- Comparatively, Oklahoma State's coach, Mike Boynton, called out the NCAA for treating Kansas leniently, referencing OSU's 2022 tournament ban for violations related to the same FBI investigation. Boynton argues that the NCAA should apologize to Oklahoma State.
