SEIU Local 1000 Authorizes One-Day Strike for Oct. 21

A PERB finding that CalHR refused to bargain in good faith raises the prospect of state moves to protect critical public services.

Overview

  • On Thursday, Oct. 8, members of SEIU Local 1000 voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike with roughly 96% of ballots in favor.
  • The union set a one-day unfair labor practice strike for Oct. 21 and published locations for strike lines in Sacramento, Oakland, Los Angeles and other cities, but it must notify the state and PERB before action proceeds.
  • SEIU’s bargaining demands include a proposed 20% across-the-board wage increase over three years, lower-cost health care and stronger telework protections.
  • The Public Employment Relations Board found in late September that CalHR refused to bargain in good faith, and the state says it is open to mediation while it may ask PERB to shield designated critical services and judge the strike’s legality.
  • About 100,000 state workers across roughly 140 departments could be affected, potentially delaying services at the DMV, unemployment and disability offices and hospitals, and employees who strike would lose pay though limited union strike funds may provide some support.
