Seine-Saint-Denis President Seeks Palestinian Flag Illumination for Eiffel Tower

The appeal underscores growing pressure on Paris to take a public stance on Gaza’s humanitarian crisis.

Pour Stéphane Troussel, ce symbole exprimerait un message fort en faveur d’une reconnaissance de l’État de Palestine.

Overview

  • Stéphane Troussel wrote to the tower’s operator to bathe it in Palestinian flag colours to honour Gaza’s victims, citing more than 54,000 deaths since October 2023 according to UNICEF.
  • In his letter, the Seine-Saint-Denis council president accuses the Israeli government led by Benjamin Netanyahu of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
  • The monument has previously been lit in support of Ukraine since February 2022, in Israel’s colours after the October 2023 attacks, and displayed the word “peace” during an April conference on Middle East peace.
  • SETE has not responded to Troussel’s request, and the City of Paris, which owns 99% of its capital, holds the final decision on any lighting changes.
  • Backers argue that illuminating the Eiffel Tower for Palestine would break global indifference and reinforce calls for a ceasefire and recognition of Palestinian suffering.
