Sega Cancels 'Super Game' Live-Service Project
The company says internal analysis showed the investment and ongoing operations needed to run a global live-service would grow too large to justify the risk.
Overview
- Sega halted development of the multi-title Super Game initiative and confirmed the cancellation in 2026 after reviewing its live-service strategy.
- President and COO Shuji Utsumi told Nikkei that analysis showed the project would require the company to expand its investment and operational scale enormously, making the launch too risky.
- Super Game was unveiled in 2021 as a plan for multiple AAA online titles and at one point carried a prospective budget of up to ¥100 billion in investment.
- Sega will continue to support existing live-service games such as Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis and Sega Football Club Champions 2026, and it is preparing Total War: Warhammer 40,000 for a closed beta later this year.
- The move follows high-profile live-service failures like Creative Assembly’s cancelled Hyenas and reflects a market where a few long-running titles dominate, a pattern that may push Sega toward lower-risk or incremental live-service work while watching for future opportunities.
