Overview
- State, federal and local leaders announced mobilization for the project, with U.S. EPA’s $132 million contract to Sevenson Environmental moving work toward an early fall start.
- Crews plan to remove nearly 900,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediment containing PAHs, PCBs, oil and grease, cadmium and lead.
- Sediment will be pumped by pipeline to the Chuckery area of Cascade Valley Metro Park for stabilization with Portland cement and subsequent revegetation.
- The cleanup is funded largely through Great Lakes restoration dollars with additional state support, including previously announced H2Ohio funds and money from a Monsanto settlement.
- Officials expect roughly two construction seasons for sediment removal before the 58‑foot Gorge Dam can be taken down, with anticipated gains in water quality, habitat and regional recreation.
