Sediment Removal Effort Launches to Enable Gorge Dam Demolition on the Cuyahoga

The cleanup clears the way for dam demolition, advancing a 2032 goal to remove the river from federal impairment lists.

Overview

  • State, federal and local leaders announced mobilization for the project, with U.S. EPA’s $132 million contract to Sevenson Environmental moving work toward an early fall start.
  • Crews plan to remove nearly 900,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediment containing PAHs, PCBs, oil and grease, cadmium and lead.
  • Sediment will be pumped by pipeline to the Chuckery area of Cascade Valley Metro Park for stabilization with Portland cement and subsequent revegetation.
  • The cleanup is funded largely through Great Lakes restoration dollars with additional state support, including previously announced H2Ohio funds and money from a Monsanto settlement.
  • Officials expect roughly two construction seasons for sediment removal before the 58‑foot Gorge Dam can be taken down, with anticipated gains in water quality, habitat and regional recreation.
