Security Guard Honoured as Coroner Calls for Public Inquiry Into Manchester Synagogue Attack

The chief coroner has urged converting the inquests so classified MI5 material can be examined and questions about pre-attack intelligence can be addressed.

Overview

  • A man drove into the gates of the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation and launched a knife attack on 2 October last year, killing Melvin Cravitz and Adrian Daulby and injuring others.
  • Volunteer security guard Andrew Franks tackled the attacker, was stabbed three times, helped barricade the doors and has since been awarded a Pride of Britain trophy while still receiving medical care.
  • Firearms officers shot and killed the attacker at the scene, but a stray police round passed through the synagogue doors and caused one of the deaths, a detail that has intensified scrutiny of the armed response.
  • Chief Coroner Judge Alexia Durran has recommended converting the separate inquests into a public inquiry so classified MI5 intelligence can be reviewed in full.
  • Survivors continue to recover from life-changing physical and psychological injuries and the proposed inquiry could examine what intelligence existed before the attack and how agencies and police acted on it.
