Security Forces Secure Major Maoist Surrenders and Cache in Gariaband, Jawan Killed in Bijapur IED

Officials say the surge of defections stems from recent leadership losses, a funding gap caused by sustained operations plus incentives from the state rehabilitation policy.

Overview

  • Four mid-to-senior Maoist cadres carrying a cumulative bounty of Rs 19 lakh, including divisional commander Deepak alias Bhima Mandavi, surrendered in Gariaband after security forces intensified intelligence-led operations.
  • Acting on tip-offs from the defectors, joint teams demolished a remote camp near Bade Gobra and seized rifles, grenades, IED components, literature and roughly Rs 16.5 lakh in cash.
  • A pressure IED detonated in Bijapur’s Indravati National Park on August 18, killing DRG jawan Dinesh Nag and wounding three colleagues during a forest patrol.
  • Raipur Range IG Amarendra Mishra and IG Naxal Operations Ankit Garg say neutralisation of senior cadres has created a leadership and funding vacuum that is accelerating defections.
  • The four defectors are being processed under Chhattisgarh’s surrender-and-rehabilitation programme, which offers assistance and counselling as security forces carry out further clearance operations.
