Security Forces Kill Fugitive 'El Meny Carranza' in Sonora Raid

Naval intelligence guided a multiagency strike seizing weapons, detaining four people and aiming to weaken the Los Fantasmas cell.

Overview

  • Francisco Manuel Romero Carranza, known as Francisco “N” or El Meny Carranza, was killed in a confrontation that occurred Saturday near the poblado of San Antonio in Sonora.
  • The operation was led by the Secretaría de Marina with coordination from the Secretaría de Seguridad y Protección Ciudadana and the Fiscalía General del Estado through AMIC, using two helicopters, an aircraft and ground teams.
  • Security forces said they were met with gunfire on arrival and repelled the attack in line with operational protocols, and four suspected accomplices were detained and handed over to the Ministerio Público.
  • Authorities reported the seizure of five long guns, two handguns, 45 magazines of various calibers, ammunition, three ballistic vests, four vehicles and a bag of marijuana, all now in custody for forensic analysis.
  • Carranza was a priority target who had been captured on March 28, escaped from Cereso No.2 in Hermosillo on July 11 with a one-million-peso reward posted for his capture, and naval tracking of movements across Sonora helped narrow the search area; officials say the operation is intended to disrupt a local cell alleged to have links to a Sinaloa cartel faction while judicial investigations continue.
