Security Breach in India's Parliament Leads to Arrests and Suspensions
Investigation Underway as Accused Face Anti-Terror Charges
- Two men were arrested after breaching security in India's parliament, setting off canisters of colored smoke inside the Lok Sabha, the lower house of parliament, causing panic and chaos. Two others were detained for protesting outside the parliament with colored smoke canisters.
- The security breach occurred on the 22nd anniversary of a deadly attack on India's parliament. The intruders had visitor passes issued under the name of Pratap Simha, a member of parliament from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
- 15 Indian opposition MPs were suspended following protests against the security breach. The MPs demanded a discussion on the incident and statements from the prime minister and the home minister.
- The Delhi Police Special Cell is recreating the scene of the security breach to understand how the intruders entered the parliament building and executed their plan. The police have arrested the mastermind behind the conspiracy, Lalit Mohan Jha.
- The accused have been charged under the anti-terror law Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), in addition to sections of the Indian Penal Code. The Ministry of Home Affairs has ordered a probe into the incident and an inquiry panel has been formed.
