Secours Populaire Barometer Finds Precarity Entrenched in France as Young Adults Bear the Brunt

NGOs urge a collective response after signs of only marginal relief from slower inflation.

Overview

  • Thirty-one percent of French respondents say they struggle to afford healthy food for three meals a day, while 39% struggle to pay electricity bills and 49% cannot take a yearly holiday.
  • Nearly half of 18–35-year-olds report difficulty accessing a balanced diet, and half say they are dissatisfied with their standard of living.
  • Young adults report acute distress, with 50% feeling anxious about their present situation or future and 22% describing themselves as despairing.
  • Overall, 20% of people consider themselves in a precarious situation, down from 24% last year, a shift the charity links to easing inflation pressures.
  • Across Europe, 28% identify as precarious, rising to 46% in Greece and 45% in Moldova; Secours populaire says it assisted 3.7 million people in France in 2024 as social groups call for broad mobilization.
