Second Tigress Translocated to Sahyadri Under Operation TARA

The soft-release of T7-S2 advances a science-led effort to rebuild Sahyadri’s breeding tiger population.

Overview

  • T7-S2, a two-year-old female from TadobaAndhari’s Kolara core range, was captured on December 8 in the Pandharpauni area and certified fit for relocation by veterinary officer Dr. Ravikant Khobragade.
  • She was soft-released into the Sonarli acclimatisation enclosure at Chandoli National Park on December 9 to familiarise her with local terrain, prey and climate before full release.
  • Wildlife Institute of India scientists K. Ramesh and Akash Patil are monitoring her behaviour and stress, with NTCA representatives Nandkishor Kale and Rohan Bhate overseeing the process.
  • Officials say the move is part of Operation TARA to revive Sahyadri’s tiger numbers and bolster genetic diversity, with Union approval in place to translocate up to eight tigers.
  • The first tigress, Chanda, was moved on November 13, completed acclimatisation and was released into the wild, where she continues to be closely tracked.
