Second Suspected Poacher Killed in Kaziranga Park Gunfight

Forest guards alongside police opened fire on suspected poachers after a credible warning of an attack on Balidubi camp staff.

  • On May 29, a joint team detected armed suspects near the Dhanbari area and exchanged fire for about 30 minutes before killing one individual.
  • Officials recovered an AK-56 rifle, a .303 rifle, 14 rounds of live ammunition, an axe, food supplies, and a torch at the encounter site.
  • The injured suspect was rushed to Swahid Kamala Miri Civil Hospital in Bokakhat, where he was declared dead on arrival.
  • This incident is the second fatal encounter in Kaziranga this month, following a similar standoff on May 21.
  • Authorities have launched a comprehensive manhunt for remaining poaching suspects to strengthen protection of the park’s one-horned rhinoceroses.
