Second Suspect in Derbent Killing Surrenders, Confesses

Investigators say they will petition a court to remand the ex–sports school director in the group-murder case.

  • Dagestan’s Investigative Committee reported that a 49-year-old local, identified in reports as wrestling coach and former sports school director Ramis A., voluntarily appeared and wrote a confession.
  • He was detained after surrendering, and investigators said a request to place him under arrest will be filed with the court shortly.
  • A criminal case has been opened against two relatives under Article 105, part 2, item “j” of Russia’s Criminal Code, which covers murder committed by a group by prior agreement.
  • Authorities previously detained the second suspect, identified as the man’s son, in the days following the alleged incident.
  • According to the investigative version, on September 28 the suspects beat an 18-year-old in Derbent, bound him, put him in a car trunk, drove him out of town, shot him with a shotgun, and buried the body; some reports list the victim as 19.
