Overview

  • A magnitude 2.7 earthquake struck near Hillsdale, New Jersey, on August 5, shaking parts of northern New Jersey, New York City and southwestern Connecticut.
  • This tremor follows a magnitude 3.0 quake in Hasbrouck Heights on August 2, marking two small earthquakes in three days across the Tri-State area.
  • There have been no reports of damage or injuries from either event, and the USGS says quakes below magnitude 3.0 are unlikely to cause significant harm.
  • USGS and New York City Emergency Management have advised residents to check for shifted items, falling debris or structural cracks and to remain alert for possible aftershocks.
  • Experts remain uncertain whether the 2.7-magnitude tremor is an aftershock of the weekend’s 3.0 event or an independent intraplate earthquake.
