Second Phase of Spain’s Christmas Road Operation Begins With Tightened Controls and High Traffic Forecasts

Authorities forecast 8.36 million trips nationwide, with traffic units, control centers and aerial patrols mobilized to manage the holiday surge.

Overview

  • DGT estimates 8.36 million vehicle movements from December 26 to January 1 as the New Year travel period gets underway.
  • The agency projects 1,922,800 trips in Andalusia and 441,408 in the Region of Murcia during this phase.
  • Reinforced deployments include Guardia Civil traffic units, more than 60 staff at the Málaga and Seville management centers, helicopters and drones, and fixed, average‑speed and mobile radar controls.
  • Drivers are urged to avoid peak hours in Andalusia (18:00–21:00 on December 26 and 28, and 10:00–13:00 on Saturday 27) on heavily loaded corridors such as the A‑4, A‑7, A‑92 and AP‑7.
  • From January 1, the V‑16 emergency beacon replaces warning triangles, complementing calls to plan journeys, adapt speed and never drive under the influence.
