Second Major Fire Hits San Jose Buddhist Temple in Two Years

Officials opened a cause investigation after crews contained the pre-dawn blaze with a partial roof collapse.

Overview

  • Firefighters responded around 5:37 a.m. to a large structure fire at 90 Foss Avenue in east San Jose, a two-story mixed-use building housing the Chua Duyen Giac Buddhist temple.
  • The San José Fire Department escalated to a third alarm, deployed multiple aerial master streams, and secured utilities during the response.
  • A partial roof collapse was reported, the building was unoccupied, and no injuries were reported.
  • Foss Avenue was closed during operations and traffic signals were out on Alum Rock Avenue between I-680 and Sunset Avenue, with roads reopening as crews cleared the scene by about 7:30 a.m.
  • The same temple was damaged in a May 13, 2024 fire that displaced four nearby residents, and the cause of Monday’s blaze remains undetermined.
