Second Levee Fails Near Seattle as Evacuations Expand and Green River Break Is Patched

Fresh levee damage is testing flood defenses already saturated by successive atmospheric rivers.

Overview

  • Police in Pacific ordered a Level 3 “Go Now” evacuation for roughly 1,300 people after a White River levee breach, with the National Weather Service issuing a flash flood warning as HESCO barriers leaked.
  • Crews temporarily repaired Monday’s Desimone levee failure on the Green River near Tukwila after evacuation alerts that covered about 46,000–47,000 residents, and the flash flood warning there was canceled later that day.
  • State and county teams, including the Washington National Guard, are reinforcing levees, conducting evacuations and rescues, and have reported more than 1,200 rescues across 10 counties since Dec. 8.
  • At least one storm-related death was confirmed in Snohomish County after a driver went past road-closure signs and was found in a submerged vehicle.
  • Infrastructure strain is mounting with long-term closure expected on a roughly 50-mile stretch of US 2, multiple other highways affected, and widespread outages cutting power to nearly 400,000 customers in Washington early Wednesday.
