Second Escaped Rhesus Macaque Shot in Mississippi as Search Continues for One Missing

Authorities urge residents to avoid contact with the animals following the crash that released 21 research monkeys.

Overview

  • Jasper County Sheriff Randy Johnson said a civilian shot the animal Monday night about a mile from the Oct. 28 crash site on I-59 north of Heidelberg.
  • Mississippi wildlife officials reported that two previously loose macaques were recovered dead and one remains unlocated.
  • A Heidelberg resident, Jessica Bond Ferguson, said she fatally shot another macaque over the weekend after seeing it near her home and fearing for her family's safety.
  • Officials have cautioned the public not to approach the rhesus macaques, noting the species can behave aggressively when frightened.
  • Tulane said the monkeys had been housed at its National Primate Research Center but it was not responsible for transport, while PreLabs said its legally transported animals were not known to carry disease and that procedures are under review; five monkeys were killed during search efforts and 13 reached their destination.
