SEC Orders Disney and Apple to Disclose AI Usage

Companies Must Include AFL-CIO Equity Index Funds' Proposals in Next Meeting Calls

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has ruled that Disney and Apple must include shareholder proposals from the AFL-CIO Equity Index Funds in their next meeting calls, which seek to provide transparency about how the companies are using artificial intelligence (AI).
Both companies had previously sought to exclude these proposals from their annual proxy statements, arguing that they concern their ordinary operations.
The AFL-CIO, the largest American labor union federation, has been actively working to push large tech companies to more openly disclose their future plans for AI technology.
The ethical issues around generative AI have been a huge issue in Hollywood in recent years and were a primary factor in the recent WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
The AFL-CIO's proposals call for reports on the companies' use of AI in their business operations and any ethical guidelines adopted for AI technology use.
