Search resumes Monday for missing person after boat capsizes off Port Kembla

Authorities will adjust search patterns using tidal forecasts after suspending efforts at sunset due to dangerous surf

Overview

  • A small boat overturned off Port Kembla on Sunday afternoon under a hazardous surf warning for the Illawarra Coast.
  • A second occupant swam to shore and was treated by paramedics after alerting emergency services by calling triple-0.
  • Surf Life Saving NSW, Police Marine Area Command, Marine Rescue NSW and the Westpac Helicopter deployed jet skis, patrol vessels and rock platform teams in the initial search.
  • Crews suspended the operation at dusk due to fading light and treacherous conditions.
  • Search will resume on Monday morning with possible expansion of the perimeter guided by tidal and wind data.
