Search Resumes for Missing 5-Year-Old at Big Sur Beach After Father Dies

Hazardous surf from a Pacific storm is limiting the multi-agency search along the Big Sur coast.

Overview

  • A wave estimated at 15 to 20 feet swept a 5-year-old into the ocean around 1 p.m. Friday at Garrapata State Beach near Rocky Point, and her father was pulled in while trying to save her.
  • An off-duty State Parks lifeguard rescued the father and performed CPR; he was pronounced dead at a local hospital, as the mother was treated for mild hypothermia and a 2-year-old was unharmed.
  • California State Parks, CAL FIRE, the U.S. Coast Guard, Monterey County Search and Rescue, CHP, and U.S. Naval Air Station Lemoore are deploying ground teams and helicopters in the search.
  • The search was suspended at 9 p.m. Friday because of weather and low visibility and resumed Saturday morning with aerial and shoreline teams, and officials asked drivers not to stop along Highway 1 near Garrapata.
  • The girl remains missing as heavy surf and storm conditions persist; most reports say she was last seen in a red shirt, though one report cites white, and authorities have not released the family’s identities.
