Overview

• The seasonal ranger was stabbed in the torso near the Old Mill/Staunton Rocks area around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday and was airlifted after treatment at a fire station; he underwent surgery and was in stable condition.
• Investigators suspended the manhunt after about eight hours and now characterize the assault as targeted with no ongoing community threat.
• The suspect remains unidentified and at large; described as a white man in his early 30s, about 6 feet, 200 pounds, brown hair, no facial hair, wearing a gray shirt and blue jeans.
• A multi-agency operation evacuated the park, used drones and aircraft, and issued alerts to roughly 8,600 nearby homes before lifting the shelter-in-place order Tuesday afternoon.
• Staunton State Park reopened Wednesday morning as the investigation continues; two people questioned by deputies were released.
