Search Halted After Passenger Falls Overboard From MS Skania Off Rügen

Authorities have halted the Baltic search pending an investigation into how the man went into the water.

Overview

  • The man fell from Unity Line's MS Skania around 16:25–16:30 on Sunday about 15 nautical miles east of Rügen during the YstadŚwinoujście crossing.
  • MRCC Bremen coordinated a cross-border response deploying DGzRS cruisers Harro Koebke and Berthold Beitz, water police, customs and nearby ships including MS Polonia.
  • Two rescue helicopters from Denmark and Sweden joined the operation, which began shortly after 17:00 with a tightly defined search area.
  • Despite calm seas and extensive sweeps, the effort was called off around 19:00 without locating the missing passenger in roughly 4°C water.
  • Unity Line said the missing person is a Polish citizen, and some outlets reported an age of 94, a detail not confirmed by authorities.
