Search Continues for 76-Year-Old British Passenger Overboard From Marella Explorer 2 Off Tenerife

Spanish authorities are directing helicopters and patrol boats in an ongoing search, with investigators yet to determine how he entered the water.

  • The man overboard alert was received at 9:48 a.m. local time on November 27 when the ship was about 16–16.5 nautical miles northwest of Punta de Teno, Tenerife.
  • Tenerife’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre launched a sea and air operation using the Helimer 201 helicopter, Salvamar Menkalinan and Salvamar Mizar vessels, and the Sasemar 103 aircraft.
  • The search was paused overnight and resumed at first light on November 28, with the Civil Guard’s Cuco helicopter rotating with Helimer 201 and the Río Guadiato patrol boat joining.
  • Marella Cruises said a guest was seen entering the water and that its care team is supporting the family while the line works with local authorities.
  • The ship slowed and executed man-overboard protocols before assisting the search and later docked at Santa Cruz de Tenerife at about 2:40 a.m.; the passenger remains missing.
