Search Continues for 70-Year-Old Swept Away in Cordes Lakes Flooding After Car Found Downstream

Crews are widening the downstream search using K-9 units, drones and ground teams.

  • Residents called 911 around 3 p.m. on Nov. 18 after seeing a small sedan swept into Big Bug Creek near East Fremont Drive and Thunderbird Trail.
  • A Yavapai County sheriff’s deputy entered the surging water and pulled a man to safety after he reportedly tried to help the driver.
  • The driver, a 70-year-old Cordes Lakes resident, was last seen being carried downstream and remains missing.
  • The sedan was found about two miles downstream lodged against a tree with no one in or near the vehicle.
  • Multi-agency teams searched Big Bug Creek and the Agua Fria River on Nov. 19 with K-9 units, drones and limited air support, and authorities urged the public to avoid the area.
