Overview

  • Mirage plunged nearly 380 feet from Inspiration Point at Bryce Canyon on April 29 when her owners, Matthew Nannen and Bailee Crane, fell to their deaths.
  • Search-and-rescue pilot Chelsea Tugaw spotted the 12-year-old tabby alive inside a torn soft-sided carrier during a recovery mission.
  • After initial treatment at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Mirage was flown to a specialty veterinary hospital in Las Vegas for care of broken ribs, dental damage and fluid around her heart.
  • The next of kin of the deceased owners granted permission for Tugaw to formally adopt Mirage on May 29, and the cat has since settled in alongside the pilot’s other pets.
  • The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal fall at the park’s Inspiration Point.
