Sealdah Station Formalizes Dedicated Platforms to Ease Commuter Congestion
The reorganization assigns fixed platforms by route to reduce commuter confusion at one of India’s busiest stations.
Overview
- After a multi-day trial in late July and an initial rollout on August 1, Eastern Railway formalized fixed-platform assignments at Sealdah on August 2.
- The scheme covers all 21 platforms, grouping services into main line, suburban (CCR, central and south) and mail/express categories.
- Platforms 1–5 now serve main line suburban routes such as Krishnanagar, Gede and Barrackpore.
- Platforms 5–8 have been assigned to CCR section services (Dankuni, Baruipara), platforms 6–10 handle central section lines (Bongaon, Barasat) and platforms 9 and 11–14 cater to mail and express trains.
- Eastern Railway anticipates the reorganization will reduce last-minute commuter rushes, improve boarding consistency for over 1.5 million daily passengers and enhance safety and operational efficiency.
